Science support staff readying a glider for deployment.

Primary applications

The Marine National Facility (MNF) is Australia’s only dedicated blue-water ocean research facility. It enables marine scientists employed by Australian research organisations and their international collaborators to undertake world-class research of national importance in our vast marine estate. The MNF is owned and operated by CSIRO on behalf of the nation, and is overseen by an independent Steering Committee.

Primary applications closed for 2021-22

The application process involves submitting a brief, compulsory Pre-proposal. Once MNF has collated the pre-proposals, applicants will be contacted and given an opportunity to consider other applications and potential for collaboration where there are potential scientific and research synergies.

Those applicants who have submitted a Pre-proposal for the 2021-22 voyage season have been invited to submit their comprehensive Primary Application for MNF Granted Voyages.

Following the release of the Primary Schedule, there will be a call for Supplementary Applications to fill any unused capacity on Research and Transit voyages that appear in the Primary Schedule.

Pre-proposals are compulsory if you wish to submit a Primary application for an MNF Granted Voyage.

Area of operation

The MNF Steering Committee has not set a specific Area of Operations and applications are invited for research within Investigator’s operational range from the tropics to the Antarctic ice edge.
